Business Books – Are They Worth A Read?

The title of this blog is obviously a rhetorical question, since the Tenet Financial Group team does in fact read and recommend several business-related books when asked.

Here’s a short list of the books on our nightstands and bookshelves these days:

Derrick Skogsberg, Founder

Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers: Feel the Fear not only empowers by showing ways to shift one’s perspective, it reminds us that we always have a choice in every situation and not choosing is a choice in itself. Sometimes it’s easy to lose touch with our power to choose, to allow fear to stop us in our tracks. Jeffers offers practical exercises to re-focus and re-channel one’s fear into something that helps instead of hinders. And she reminds us that it’s a journey, not a destination, so facing and embracing fear will be a lifelong adventure.

Dan Sitzmann, Vice President of Plan Administration

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Other Don’t by Jim Collins: Good to Great touches on what types of leadership top companies need to achieve the most success. Collins dives into several areas such as Level 5 Leaders, The Hedgehog Concept, A Culture of Discipline and The Flywheel and the Doom Loop.

Zack Flodeen, Senior Consultant

Your Money and Your Brain by Jason Zweig: A very well-written and down-to-earth read about behavioral psychology (basically why we make the decision that we do). Not only do you learn more about our decision-making process as human beings, there is plenty of great advice on how to become a better long-term investor.

Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell: This book is a really engaging read, so it’s easy to get through quickly. Gladwell examines some of the less discussed factors that contribute to high levels of success. The takeaway from this book is less about what you need to do to become successful and more about shifting your frame of reference.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey: The lessons you learn in this book transfer to all areas of your life, making it my absolute favorite personal development book. I would recommend that everyone read it at least once. I’ve read it and listened to the audio book many times over which always helps to point me back in the right direction in life.

Lindsey Lair, Client Service Representative

Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey: This book has a lot of great advice on how to get out of debt and get ahead financially. My husband and I have completed the program and are well on our way to realizing our financial goals, including paying off our debt and investing in our retirement while we are both still young.
